There’s more than just the award-winning hoppy ales to enjoy, with a great choice of food and a relaxed atmosphere.
NESTLED halfway between Poole and Bournemouth town centres, this well-heeled pub/restaurant has plenty to offer, not to mention a very fine selection of award-winning ales. The large building and outside terrace make it easy to spot along the Bournemouth Road. A regular haunt for locals and those who are in the know, the Grasshopper has recently benefited from an extensive refurbishment. Once through the door, you’re immediately struck by its light and airy proportions. The interior is contemporary, fresh and relaxed. With an abundance of space, you can cherry-pick a cosy table in the restaurant or sink into a comfortable sofa by the bar. When it comes to food, the carefully considered menu raises the bar on what you’d expect from a pub restaurant. Alongside the classic pub fare, there’s a pleasing choice of more adventurous dishes such as oriental salmon, Thai jungle curry and the beautiful larder boards.
All tastes are fully catered for, and the menu boasts a wide selection of interesting vegetarian dishes like homity pie and a sweet potato and red pepper burger. It has a varied children’s menu, too, with a current promotion of any meal plus a free tub of Salcombe ice cream for £5.50.
Another thoughtful touch is the very useful addition of information about gluten-free dishes on the menu. However, the real star of the show is the locally brewed beer that flows from the pumps, courtesy of the award-winning Badger Beers from Dorset. The newest addition to the bar is Leaping Legend, an exciting citrus flavoured beer that has been proving popular with customers. It’s the perfect accompaniment to one of the many delicious dishes on offer.
Menu’s Verdict: The Grasshopper is a laid-back treat for any occasion to enjoy a quality, well-priced meal, something lighter or just a refreshing drink.
Recommended dishes: The sharing larder boards are something special. The classic and the vegetarian options both come presented on an impressive rustic wooden board.
The classic (£12.15) comprises pork & herb pâté, carved ham, prosciutto and a selection of cheese, with a soft boiled egg, prawns, tomato and cucumber bound in a Marie Rose sauce, with bread, chutney and salad.
The vegetarian (£11.95) boasts roasted Mediterranean vegetables, houmous, egg mayo with cracked black pepper & cress and a selection of cheese, with bread, chutney and salad.
